In vest form, this new material takes on the heritage look (knocked off by brands around the world) and the windproof warmth that you've come to know. With special considerations such as a more relaxed silhouette, fuzziness on the inside of the collar, and a pocket shape that harkens back to the early 2000s, it's a fresh take on an old favorite that's sure to stick with you through the years. Our Verdict
The Patagonia Classic Retro-X Vest offers the same familiar warmth and wind protection as the jacket version, but in a more versatile sleeveless design. The latest model now uses fully recycled Repreve polyester fleece with a PFAS-free lining and trim made from recycled fishing nets, bringing a sustainable update to one of Patagonia’s most recognisable pieces.
At 474g (Medium), it feels substantial yet easy to wear over a base layer or under a shell. The windproof lining blocks the chill, while the high collar and dense fleece provide excellent insulation on cool, dry days. The fit has been slightly relaxed for added comfort, making it just as suitable for casual use. Build quality remains first-rate, with precise stitching and durable reinforcements at key points. Breathability is moderate, which suits steady activity or everyday wear better than sustained exertion.
