Our Verdict
The Outdoor Research Helium Rain Mitts provide reliable rain and wind protection in a compact, ultralight package. At 20 g (Medium), they are designed as a pure shell, built from Pertex Shield Diamond Fuse fabric with taped seams for complete waterproofing. The fit is trim and works well over thin liner gloves, with pull-on loops that make them easy to use in poor weather.
Breathability is good for a 2.5-layer fabric, with enough moisture transfer to stay comfortable when moving at a pace. The material feels delicate but has proven durable enough when treated with care. They pack down to almost nothing and dry fast after use. These are not mitts I would reach for on a demanding winter hike deep into the mountains, but for everything else, they excel. They block wind effectively on exposed ridges and serve perfectly as a quick waterproof layer to pull on over lighter gloves in wet or cold conditions.
