UOG TOP PICK: Combining highly efficient 1000-fill-power down with a capable, weather-resistant shell, the Ignis Down Parka is an outstanding option for lightweight winter insulation.
Montbell says:
By utilizing industry-leading ultralight 1000 fill power EX Down and pairing it with waterproof, highly breathable SUPER DRY-TEC, the Ignis Down Parka is an ultralight, compact down piece that is windproof and offers a modest level of weather resistance. The face fabric helps maintain loft by keeping the down dry, ensuring warmth and comfort across a variety of conditions.
Our Verdict
The Montbell Ignis Down Parka pairs ultralight construction with very high-quality 1000-fill-power down, delivering a strong warmth-to-weight balance for winter layering. The Medium comes in at 294g. The updated model uses a new Super Dry Tech outer fabric to increase weather resistance without compromising breathability or loft retention.
It is important to note that this is not a fully waterproof down jacket. There are no taped seams, and the stitch-through baffles mean water can seep in during prolonged exposure. The Super Dry Tech fabric does provide a noticeable level of protection, though, buying time to pull out a shell and helping keep the down from wetting out in passing showers and wind.
Fit is clean and sits around belt height. I found this comfortable for hiking, though those wanting a little more protection may prefer something longer. The hood has two points of adjustment: one around the face and the other via a hook-and-loop volume tab. Cuffs also use hook-and-loop fastening, which works neatly when switching between different glove thicknesses. The hem is adjusted into the two hand-warming pockets, keeping the cords protected. The pockets themselves are generous and fleece-lined. Two internal dump pockets are ideal for spare gloves or keeping a power bank warm.
I am 6ft with a slimmer build, and the Large feels true to size with space for a fleece layer. As an outer layer in calm, cold conditions or under a shell in rough weather, the Ignis is worth consideration for your winter insulating layer.
