Our Verdict
Scarpa's Mid version of their bombproof Mescalito approach shoe the mid version offers more support for longer walks or more challenging terrain where you need a bit more protection around the ankle.
The Mescaltio is renowned as a top end approach shoe designed for long days at the crag, scrambling, Via Ferrata or crossing ridges. To facilitate this the Dynamis Vibram sole offers both a good level of stiffness as well as a softer rubber compound to provide maximum grip on steep ground, so you can always be confident in you foot placement.
The Gore-Tex version allows you to venture out even when the weather turns bad and your feet will stay dry under the Gore-Tex guarantee.
The Mid version offers a greater range of usage than the standard shoe as the increase in support around the ankle means that they can be used for longer days out, were you need a bit more comfort and protection around the ankle particularly on steeper paths or when scrambling.
Fit wise the Mescalito's have a wider to box and generally fit people with an average to broad foot better, than those with a narrow forefoot. I have found that although having a narrow foot myself with a volume reducing insole they still can be adjusted to fit well.
These are definitley more of an approach shoe and for people looking to cover more technical ground due to the nature of the sole unit and are perfect for this usage. However, while they are suitable for occasional use on paths and trails, they may will not last as long as a conventional waking boot for this usage.
