UOG TOP PICK -Kumo 36 Superlight Rucksack If every gram counts consider using Gossamer Gear's Kumo 36 Superlight Rucksack. A very light-weight pack with a full-on feature set, strip it down to save more weight or stuff it to the gills either way its a great option to keep your adventures minimalist. Overall a fantastic bag for quick hikes when minimal gear is needed, everything we love, and one of our top picks.
Gossamer Gear says: Tough, frameless pack for day trippers and die-hard minimalists.
The new Kumo is here! Two sizes and updated custom fabrics make this generation of Kumos the best yet.
This is a smaller-volume pack for low-stuff adventures. Maybe you’re doing a day hike and just carrying six or seven of the ten essentials. Or maybe you’re a wilderness warrior whose trail name is “Tent? Who needs a tent?” and thinks nothing of heading out on a backcountry weekend with six energy bars, one pair of socks and a Mylar blanket. Any hiker who wants more of an experience with less luggage will love the Kumo 36.
Our Verdict
Gossamer Gear's Kumo 36 Superlight Rucksack, is one of our lightest rucksacks in the 30 -40 litre range. You can't get this light without sacrificing some durability but the pack doesn't lack for features.
The bag gives the appearance of a roll top enclosure but you get a pair of clips to narrow the entrance then the top folds down to be closed with compression straps to keep your pack contents secure. The fold over top has a zipped pocket. You get adjustable chest straps and removable hip belts which have zipped pockets for stashing those essentials you need when on the go. The shoulder straps have a lot of padding and useful small mesh pockets for items such energy gels.
The Kumo also has 2 side pockets suitable for water bottles and a large mesh pocket for further storage options. There are shock cord compression straps on both side panels. There is a lashing loop which could be used as an ice axe holder but I'm not convinced how effective it would be.
There is no rigid support structure but the comfy foam back panel can quickly be removed to uses as a sit mat or sleeping pad. A very light-weight and versatile pack given the feature set.
