Our Verdict

The Outdoor Research Helium UL Rain Mitt is a minimalist waterproof layer designed for sudden weather changes. The 2026 version uses an updated Pertex Shield NetPlus 2.5-layer fabric, maintaining the familiar lightweight feel while offering dependable rain and wind protection. At 19g for Small or Medium and 22g for Large or XLarge, they are genuinely compact and easy to carry without second thought.

The fit is intentionally roomy, allowing them to slip over thin liner gloves when temperatures drop. As with any mitt design, dexterity is limited. The pull-on loop makes getting them on quickly straightforward when rain arrives unexpectedly.

The 30D recycled nylon ripstop feels reassuringly robust for something so light. They will stand up to constant trekking pole use; treated with care around rough rock and sharp kit, they perform well and offer a protective outer layer.
