Our Verdict
At 78g (Medium), the Eiger Nordwand FL Air Mesh Vest is unfathomably light, built with Polartec Alpha Direct in polypropylene rather than polyester. This choice makes the vest both more hydrophobic and more efficient at trapping warmth for its weight. The open mesh construction ensures rapid moisture transfer, keeping the fabric feeling dry even during sustained effort, while the polypropylene fibres resist absorbing sweat. The cut is athletic and streamlined, aided by overlock seams that allow stretch and reduce chafing. Elastic edge bindings further improve comfort, particularly when worn under a harness or pack.
The two standout qualities are breathability and quick drying. The vest actively regulates temperature under exertion, avoiding the clammy feel that some midlayers can develop. The fabric is light and breathable, but that comes at a cost. It won’t be as tough against abrasion from pack straps or rough rock, so I find it best to use it under a shell when moving through harsher terrain.
