Rab's Backpack Range Explained

Mar 03, 2019

Intro...

Nitron Rucksacks

The Rab Nitron 25 stays impressively light at just under 600g, yet still feels solid and well considered. The vest-style harness provides a snug, stable fit that stays in place across technical ground, with dual chest straps adding a reassuring sense of security when picking up the pace. The vest pockets are useful—I could grab a bottle, phone, or sat comm device without breaking stride.

External pole storage is excellent, especially for a pack this size. I appreciate the deep front mesh panel, ideal for stashing waterproofs or other quick-access items. The fin-like hip pockets wrap neatly around the body and protrude into the bottle pockets, giving you far more storage than expected.

Durability feels spot on for its weight, with reinforced fabrics where they’re needed most. It’s not cluttered with unnecessary features—what’s here works, and works well.

Light, stable, and cleverly designed—this is a pack built for efficiency without compromise.

Veil XP Rucksacks

I’m not a mountain marathon runner, but as a minimalist wild camper, I was genuinely excited about this pack—and it didn’t disappoint. Weighing in at around 545g, it’s impressively light, yet handles a full load confidently thanks to its close-fitting, vest-style harness. Each side of the harness can hold a 500ml soft flask and also features a zipped pocket for quick-access essentials. Rab’s ultra-breathable mono-mesh on the harness, paired with a 3D spacer mesh back panel, keeps things cool, dry, and stable when you’re on the move.

The layout has clearly been carefully considered. The large stretch mesh pocket on the front is ideal for stashing a wet waterproof or quick-access layer. The asymmetric side pockets are both reachable while wearing the pack—one zipped and compact, perfect for a water bottle; the other oversized, great for quickly dumping a layer or, more importantly for me, carrying a compact shelter. That’s the standout feature that shifts this from a running pack into wild camping territory. A dedicated pole sleeve securely holds either trekking or tent poles, reinforcing the pack’s fastpacking credentials.

The hipbelt is minimal but well executed. It sits flat and secure with a simple hook-and-loop fastening backed by a low-profile SR buckle, which keeps it locked in without adding bulk. Perforations across the belt offer a surprising level of ventilation, and it feels stable without being restrictive—great when moving fast with a light load.

The roll-top main compartment is fully waterproof with taped seams (IPX4-rated), so there’s no need for dry bags, and the dual chest straps and harness pockets keep everything secure and accessible while on the move.

Light, weatherproof, and smartly featured—this race pack that’s wild camp is ready.

Exion Rucksacks

Rab's entry into the traditional backpacking market with the Exion 48 represents a shift from their previous ultralight focus, aligning more closely with offerings from brands like Osprey and Gregory. Weighing 1,485 grams (for the medium/large size), this 48-litre rucksack is designed for multi-day treks and overnight trips, where comfort and functionality take precedence over the minimalism of an ultralight pack.

The V-TRAX hook-and-loop adjustable back system allows for a tailored fit, effectively transferring the load onto the hips for better weight distribution. The wraparound harness construction ensures full contact around the waist, enhancing overall stability and comfort. With a thick, plush lumbar pad and a well-cushioned hip belt, the Exion 48 provides ample padding, reducing pressure points and improving long-term comfort on the trail.

A standout feature of the Exion 48 is its U-shaped front zip, allowing easy access to the main compartment without having to remove the lid or rummage through your pack—perfect for quickly grabbing a wayward glove or stashed layer. The large mesh front pocket is equally practical, providing a convenient spot for waterproofs, maps, or other quick-access essentials.

However, the compression straps over the side mesh pockets can be a minor frustration. While they do an excellent job securing gear, they can obstruct easy access to water bottles or other frequently used items. Loosening or adjusting them helps, but those who prefer a seamless grab-and-go experience may find this aspect slightly cumbersome.

The Rab Exion 48 is a well-balanced rucksack that blends traditional design with modern functionality. With a strong focus on comfort and accessibility, it’s a solid choice for backpackers looking for reliability and thoughtful features on the trail.

Adjustable Back Lengths & ND Packs Explained

Rab makes packs to fit your unique body shape, while also being suited to your activity of choice. Their adjustable back lengths follow a standard size.

Rab's ND Packs (Narrow Dimensions) are built with different proportions to our Regular Packs, making them ideally suited to anyone with a smaller frame. They’re designed to provide a comfortable and supportive fit for women or men with a narrower build.

Hyperon Rucksacks

The Rab Hyperion 65 shines on multi-day routes where carrying a bit more is non-negotiable. Weighing in at 2,458g, it's not chasing ultralight status, but Rab has prioritised durability and comfort over weight savings—and it shows.

The V-TRAX carry system is refreshingly straightforward. A Velcro-based adjustment lets you slide the harness to match your torso length, and once it’s set, it stays locked in. The back panel offers enough breathability for sweaty ascents, while the padding strikes a nice balance: supportive without feeling bulky.

Storage is intuitive and practical. Dual access—top and lower zipped entry—with an internal divider makes packing and unpacking a breeze. The hipbelt pockets are genuinely usable, roomy enough for snacks or a phone, and the side pockets easily swallow 1L bottles. The front pocket, while more protected than your typical mesh pouch, isn't as quick to access—a trade-off between convenience and durability that, honestly, sums up the bag’s design philosophy.

Internal compression straps help stabilise the load, and a rain cover is stashed underneath for when the weather turns.

In short, the Hyperion 65 is built to carry weight without complaint. Fully loaded, it doesn’t rattle or sag, and it feels like a pack made for the long haul—especially when reliability matters more than bells and whistles. This is the one I'd grab for remote treks, where gear failure isn’t an option.
