Pyrenean High Route - Section 5 2017 - Intro Page

Posted by Mark Richardson on Aug 01, 2017

The Pyrenean High Route is an 800+ km journey over the high passes of the Pyrenean Mountains from Hendaye on the Atlantic coast to Banyuls sur Mer on the Mediteranean, it criss-crosses the border between France and Spain and takes around 42 days to complete. Ton Joostens guide published by Cicerone is the definitive publication on the route and divides it into five sections.

In 2009 and 2010 I completed sections 1-4 leaving section 5 until this year to tackle. Although it’s part of a bigger walk it constitutes a decent backpacking route in itself for 9 or 10 days which I tackled at the end of August (during a heat wave!). The section starts at L’Hospitalet pres d’Andorre and finishes at the seaside town of Banyuls sur Mer.

His favourite hikes have been Torres del Paine (full circuit), the John Muir trail and the Markha Valley trail (Ladakh, India). Although semi-retired Mark has not lost any enthusiasm for minimalist backpacking and is tackling Scotland’s Munros choosing multi-day backpacking routes over the more usual guide book excursions.
