Howgills 2018 - Introduction

Posted by Danny Pearson on Mar 01, 2018

When planning this trip there was a choice of a 3 day loop or an A-B walk. Given the proximity to the Settle to Carlisle railway it seemed a great opportunity to utilise this rail route and walk between stations. We decided on an A-B walk taking in the Howgill Fells and Dentdale utilising the Ribblehead and Kirkby Stephen railway stations.

The walk was planned to take place over the 1st weekend in March 2018. Unfortunately, the arrival of the Beast from the East weather system meant that the A66 (our route over the Pennines) and the Settle to Carlisle line were both closed by the unprecedented snow fall so we had to postpone the trip for a week. There were originally going to be 3 of us walking together but one of the people couldn’t make the rescheduled date so it was just myself and one other friend who would be walking the route.
