Our Verdict
Altra's Lone Peak 8 running and trekking shoes follow the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" approach, closely resembling their predecessors. The primary upgrade lies in the outer fabric, which now provides enhanced breathability. These shoes continue to offer Altra's iconic roomy toe-box and zero-drop construction, making them some of the top choices on the market.
As a long-distance walker, I've found the Lone Peaks to be my go-to footwear since the Lone Peak 5. Their 25mm stack height provides excellent cushioning, ensuring comfort during all-day wear on various terrains, including long stretches of road walking.
The MaxTrac outsole features multi-directional lugs that deliver exceptional grip across different underfoot conditions, making them ideal for trail running and general hiking. Despite not being waterproof, the Lone Peak 8s dry remarkably quickly, especially with thinner socks, making them a practical choice for multi-day hiking.
Overall, as Altra proudly proclaims, "the legend continues." The Lone Peak 8s remain among the best lightweight trail shoes available. While I hope future iterations, such as the inevitable Lone Peak 9s, incorporate more significant changes to justify the update, I can't help but dream of seeing a Vibram sole on these legendary shoes.
