This pack is designed for on-trail, off-trail, and all-season environments, with mesh exterior pockets for content visibility, ventilation, and quick-drying of damp gear. Our Verdict
The Hyperlite Mountain Gear Windrider 55 in White DCH50 has proven to be a versatile and resilient companion for long-distance backpacking and thru-hiking. Weighing in at around 885 grams, this 55-litre pack balances ultralight design with notable durability, thanks to the Dyneema Composite Hybrid (DCH50) fabric, which easily handles rugged terrain and variable weather conditions.
One of the pack’s standout features is its thoughtful storage options. The spacious main compartment is secured with a roll-top closure, allowing for flexible packing and a solid barrier against wet conditions. The three external mesh pockets are handy for storing damp or frequently accessed items like rain gear or a water filter. I’ve found these mesh pockets incredibly convenient on the trail, though it’s worth noting that they lack elasticity, so packing with care is necessary to avoid snags. There are accessory straps available that aid in compressing the pack.
The padded shoulder straps and a hip belt distribute weight effectively to the hips. Two removable aluminium stays offer additional support for loads up to 18 kilograms, though it performs best with lighter loads under 14 kilograms. The padded hip belt pockets are a welcome touch, keeping smaller essentials accessible without stopping and rummaging through the main compartment.
The modular design of the Windrider allows for easy customisation, with side compression straps and daisy chains on the shoulder straps for added versatility. This adjustability makes it a solid option for those who value a tailored carry experience. The roll-top closure and top Y-strap provide flexible volume management, allowing me to keep the pack streamlined even on shorter trips with less gear.
