Our Verdict
The Hyperlite Mountain Gear Southwest 40 Rucksack is a robust and lightweight pack, weighing just 886g for the medium size. It provides a solid balance between durability and minimalism, making it a popular choice among ultralight hikers. Its Dyneema fabric construction ensures excellent water resistance and durability, especially in the black DCH150 version, which is more abrasion-resistant than the lighter white variant.
The Southwest 40's streamlined design includes a spacious 40L main compartment with nearly 10L of external pocket space. The solid fabric external pockets prevent snags in rough environments, making the pack ideal for off-trail activities. However, as these pockets are not elasticated, they do not have any give. The removable aluminium stays help distribute the weight effectively, though some hikers might find the minimal padding on the hip belt and shoulder straps less forgiving on longer, heavier trips. However, this pack excels for hikers looking to balance low weight with durability in tough conditions.
