Revel Shell Mitts combine waterproof protection with extreme lightweight and packability. In winter, they are perfect for backcountry skiers and mountaineers, who layer them over lightweight "uphill" gloves for added warmth and protection.
Our Verdict
The Revel Shell Mitts are a waterproof and breathable outer shell for your hands. They are not insulating, though they obviously provide some warmth. They are intended to be worn over a layered glove system, similar to how a waterproof shell is worn over your mid-layer. This is because one pair of gloves is fine at lower levels or in milder climates, but when climbing in the snow, you need to be able to adjust your gloves to keep your hands at the perfect temperature. If you put on your bulky climbing gloves too early, your hands will get sweaty and uncomfortable. But if you put them on too late, your hands will get cold and you won't be able to move them properly. A layering system solves this problem, as you can add or remove layers as needed.
The Revel Shell Mitts are a hard-wearing waterproof shell that packs down small and weighs very little. They have a secure fastening around the wrist and forearm to keep wind, snow, and rain out. The palm of the glove is reinforced to protect it from wear and tear from trekking poles and ice axes.
