Our Verdict
The Hyperlite Mountain Gear Junction 55 in Black DCH150 has become my trusted choice for multi-day backpacking and thru-hiking, thanks to its blend of ultralight design and enhanced durability. Constructed from the tougher 150-denier Dyneema Composite Hybrid (DCH150) fabric, this version of the Junction 55 is built to handle rougher conditions and more abrasive terrain, all while keeping the weight impressively low at around 956 grams for the medium size. It’s surprisingly spacious without being cumbersome, with 55 litres of main storage and an additional 10 litres across external pockets.
The roll-top closure is one of my favourite features, as it offers adaptable storage and keeps out the elements. The mix of a solid front mesh pocket and two durable side pockets is particularly useful—I typically use the mesh for airing damp gear and reserve the side pockets for items needing more protection. The mesh on this version lacks elasticity, so it won’t stretch to fit bulkier items, but it’s still incredibly functional. For carrying comfort, the aluminium stays, and foam back panel distribute weight efficiently, while the padded hip and shoulder straps make loads up to 18 kilograms manageable. However, this pack excels with weights under 14 kilograms, making it ideal for gram-counting thru-hikers on extended journeys.
In short, the Junction 55 in Black DCH150 is a rugged and practical pack for anyone needing a balance of durability and comfort without sacrificing an ultralight build.
