Montane Petrichor Technology

Aug 15, 2022

What is Petrichor Technology™?

PETRICHOR delivers reliable waterproof protection with a 20,000 hydrostatic head. The PFAS-free, lightweight, 100% waterproof membrane is thinner than a single human hair. Because it’s non-porous, the membrane is also completely windproof to give you absolute confidence in challenging environments.

Then, the PFC-free durable waterproof coating (DWR) beads precipitation and allows it to roll off the face fabric to stop it wetting out.

We have developed a bespoke fabric sandwich allowing the garments to move with your body while delivering reliable waterproof performance, and staying quiet when moving fast and light.

Technology Breakdown

 3-Layer Laminate

Waterproof, breathable 3 layer laminate PETRICHOR TECHNOLOGY™.

Face Textile

This layer protects the membrane, and carries the colour and the DWR.

The Membrane

The membrane provides a physical barrier to external water and enhances comfort due to exceptional breathability and moisture management.

Backer Textile

The backer protects the membrane and enhances next-to-skin comfort.

How does it work?

Unlike traditional waterproof technology, PETRICHOR’s hydrophilic membrane actively breathes to physically transport moisture away from damp layers and skin, and out into the air. The membrane manages your own microclimate to enable you to move fast and light while staying dry - the harder you work, the harder it works.

This technology excels even when your baselayer is slightly wet, the air is cold and damp, and you need to move fast through the mountains.

Technology Development

Montane developed PETRICHOR from the ground up, taking inspiration from the outdoor spaces where we test our products. We all need protection from the elements but when you stop to appreciate your surroundings you notice the details – like petrichor itself:

‘Petrichor is the earthy smell that rises from the ground after the first drops of rain fall’.

Why PFAS Free?

We chose to use 100% recycled materials in the development of PETRICHOR. Because the membrane is PFAS-free, and we coat the face fabrics in PFC-free DWR, these garments are designed to reduce the environmental impacts of manufacturing, and constructed to stand the test of time.

Clean aesthetic lines and durable fabrics embed Timeless Design in all PETRICHOR products, helping them to thrive in extreme weather conditions and become your long-term trusted companion in the mountains.
