Our Verdict
The new Mountain Seeker Gore-Tex jacket is part of Berghaus' re-introduced Extrem range, in a move back to producing top end performance kit that the company was founded on.
The Seeker jacket is a good example of the philosophy adopted by Berghaus for the Extrem range, which is to offer everything you need and nothing you don't. Where other brands are focused heavily on features and saving weight, the Extrem range is focused on high levels of durability and long-lasting performance.
The main feature of the Seeker jacket is its durability. The high 70D fabric gives a feeling of security as soon as you put the jacket on, it is obvious that it is going to last. This makes it ideal for everything from winter climbing, skiing in the alps, or just a trip out into the mountains.
Features wise, the Seeker shell has plenty of pockets with two large pockets on the front and a good-sized chest pocket, good length pit zips and lots of adjustment toggles. The hood is helmet compatible, but it can be adjusted down quite well to fit normally, but leaves a bit of bag on the sides of the hood. Having the front adjustment toggles on the inside of the jacket is not my favourite design, but they are not too in the way. The selves are a good design as they have more of a flared cuff meaning it is easy to get your winter gloves underneath without having to struggle, but can be adjusted well.
The sizing on Berghaus tends to be larger and a bit less tailored, which seems to be true on the Seeker shell. It gives room for fitting layers underneath, even a decent sized down jacket, or a midlayer and baselayer combination, without feeling restricted.
The choice to use the performance shell Gore-Tex over the Pro means that the seeker comes in at a very reasonable price. It is ideal for those not looking to purchase the very top end shell and are after something that has a good range of features that is going to last a long time.
