The Ultra Light Shell Parka is a surprisingly protective wind shell with year-round functionality. The jacket uses a lightweight 12D fabric to create a highly wind resistant barrier and provide a little insulation too.
Montbell says
The outer shell is made with an ultrathin material that is surprisingly strong and provides excellent wind proofing. The polyester lining provides adequate insulation for cooler weather while also functioning as a way to quickly wick away moisture. In addition, the stretch fabric in the back and sleeves and the ventilation under the arms provide comfort even when you're charging up your favorite trail.
Our Verdict
Montbell's Ultra Light Shell Parka is a versatile item of clothing that has its place across the seasons either as an emergency layer or as lightweight protection. The lightweight 12D fabric is soft, smooth and surprisingly comfortable against the skin. With this low weight the jacket has simple elasticated sleeve cuffs, a 2-way adjustable hood and chest pocket making it highly practical too.
The jacket has mesh vents under the arms to help with ventilation and reduce moisture build up when things heat up. Despite no obvious DWR treatment, this jacket still provides a reasonable amount of weather protection. The chest pocket doubles as a stuff sack so it's perfectly sized to keep this jacket packed small and compact when added to a daypack for later use.
