Our Verdict

Versatility is always something I look for in a bit of kit, asking yourself “what else can this be used for?” is a good way to streamline your kit list, and keep the weight down. so a waterproof that doubles as a shelter peaks my interest.

If you are a minimalist and like to take only the bare essentials this poncho could save you carrying a; waterproof jacket, trousers, pack cover, and even a tent, which would dramatically cut your pack weight down. In driving rain, this poncho is going to offer you and your gear near-limitless protection from the elements, being as close to waterproof as you can get, while still being able to let your body breathe and sweat without being uncomfortable and overheating. The sheer amount of ventilation this offers is unparalleled to that of more traditional waterproofs. However in high winds the poncho can become unmanageable, and I don’t think enough buttons and fasteners have been provided for for when a “batten down the hatches” situation arises.

For low-level forests or valley hiking this is a very good product, for something like the West Highland Way, I think this would be a good addition to a kit list. However, if the high fells or open moors are calling, I would stick to more traditional garb.

As for use as a shelter, I would combine it with a bivvy bag and it will work well. It has plenty of tie out points so you can tailor the tarp to to suit your setup. The drawstring on the hood can be fully closed to make sure no water will leak on you during the night. Would it be my personal choice for a primary shelter? No, but I’m a tent guy, however knowing that my waterproofs can provide an emergency shelter for myself or someone else in an emergency situation, is the kind of versatility that makes this product stand out.
