A Lightweight, hard-working day pack that packs a lot into its 18L size.

Osprey says

Whether you're hiking or biking, the Talon 18 will take you there in ultimate comfort. This streamlined versatile top-loader has all the features you need to move smoothly across the most demainding terrain. An injection-moulded AirScape backpanel and a continuous-wrap harness and hipbelt moves with you. Featuring a hydration reservoir sleeve, trekking pole and ice axe attachment points, this lightweight pack is truly multisport. Constructed with high-quality bluesign-approved recycled high-tenacity nylon with a PFC-free DWR coating.

Our Verdict

This is a brilliant bag for day hikes. if I’m going out to bag some wainwrights, or doing some coastal walking, it’s nice to have a streamlined bag that can just carry my essentials, while still giving me the features I've come to expect, from the larger bags I use when I’m backpacking for a few days.

The feature I love the most, and one I will be looking out for in all future backpacks I own is the stow-on-the-go trekking pole attachment loops. I’m a big fan of trekking poles (as you should be) but don’t always feel the need to use them especially if I'm doing some road walking. Donning and doffing your bag every time you want to use your poles is impractical, so having a dedicated place I can attach my poles without having to remove my bag is a big plus for me.

The AirScape HDPE back panel, allows a good amount of air to circulate between your back and the pack which helps keep you cool.

The two hip belt pockets are of ok size, not huge, but big enough to store some snacks. The Stretch pocket on the harness just about fitted my mobile phone, (which is a rather large model) but the fabric will stretch over time so that’s not a concern for me.

Despite my best efforts, I couldn’t reach or stash my water bottle with the bag on, but It does have a place for a water bladder. If you are someone who likes night hikes, or you’re a cyclist who is often out after dark, the LED attachment point lets you attach a light to your backpack, which is a really nice safety feature.
