Our Verdict
Hoka One One's Speedgoat 4 GTX is one of the most well known shoes in the range due to the versatile and balanced performances it delivers. Designed to provide the wearer with a balance of cushioning, support and a responsive feel. Even with the 28mm stack in the forefoot and 32mm heel this shoe is ideal for use on varied terrain and is frequently chosen by trail and mountain runners after that extra support. There is still a supreme amount of cushioning and amazing levels of comfort, as you'd expect from Hoka, so that certainly hasn't been sacrificed for the more responsive feel. As with much of the Hoka range, the style and in particular the look of the sole is not going to be to everyone's taste but the support you get from them, especially for long days and multiday trips is certainly worthwhile in our experience.
In this shoe there is a quality Gore-Tex waterproof lining that will keep your feet dry through a range of conditions, whether that it the terrain or the weather itself. They also use the Virbam Megagrip which provides a really good amount of grip on varied terrain in the wet and dry. The sole has 5mm lugs for gaining traction when you need it most and it gives a bit of extra stability. There is variation in the foam used in the sole to provide a balance of cushioning and responsiveness.
