UOG TOP PICK - OMM's Halo Jacket - The perfect foray into lightweight Waterproofs - We've singled out OMM's Halo Jacket as one of our top recommendations because it's very lightweight, offers decent weather protection and breathability but also won't break the bank. It's the ideal starter jacket if you're just getting into upgrading your kit to lightweight or if you're about to compete in your first Mountain Marathon.
The Halo shell is an ultralight weight waterproof jacket perfect for stashing in your pack and forgetting about it until you need it - then it does exactly what it needs to and protects you from the elements.
OMM says
An ultra lightweight, breathable and packable waterproof jacket. Designed to function in all conditions, with mountain jacket features and constructed using minimal seams in a 2.5 layer waterproof fabric.
Our Verdict
OMM's Halo Jacket is a simple and effective racer shell. Weight is the key so there are no pockets, limited adjustments and no fancy features that will add weight. The jacket still has an elasticated hood and cuffs, thumb loops on the cuffs and simple adjustments on the hem. With a 2g difference in weight between this and the smock many would sacrifice that for the practicality of the full zip.
This jacket has taped seams, so it meets the mandatory kit list requirement, and is super light. It is not aimed as anything but a shell for throwing in your pack for trail and mountain races. It doesn't have the highest waterproof or breathability rating but for what it is used for it is spot on and it is significantly cheaper than the competition.
