Designed for high altitude mountaineering and expeditions that encounter the harshest conditions, the Expedition 900 bag brilliantly balances warmth, weight and performance. Excellent construction and surprisingly lightweight for -30°C.
Criterion says
The Criterion Expedition 900 down sleeping bag is designed for winter Alpinism and extreme cold expeditions, it has been used by British Antarctic Survey. With a comfort temperature rating of -30°C you can camp out in alpine conditions and mild polar conditions. Its weight is 1570 grams, which is low considering the low comfort temperature.
It is made using a Pertex Quantum Pro (formerly Pertex Endurance) ripstop shell filled with 900g of 850 FP Polish Goose down. Superior Brick construction eliminates cold spots and increases warmth, enabling a comfortable night’s sleep in extremely low temperatures. Neck and zip baffles keep out drafts, whilst 2 way YKK zips enable venting to help you control the temperature inside your sleeping bag.
A DWR treatment of the shell helps protect the down from any dampness that may occur in your tent, from condensation or wet gear. When in its stuff sack, the pack size is 20.5 x 20.5 x 39 cm.
Suggested Outdoors Activities
The activities most suitable for using a Criterion Expedition 900 sleeping bag are winter alpinism and extreme cold expeditions. With a comfort temperature of -30°C the Criterion Expedition 900 will keep you warm in the worst alpine conditions and in mild polar conditions. The weight of 1570 grams is low for a sleeping bag with this comfort temperature.
Our Verdict
Criterion's Expedition 900 Down Sleeping Bag is designed to provide serious levels of warmth for the coldest conditions. The bag uses 900g of 850 Fill Power Down to achieve a comfort limit of -30°C. With an overall weight of just under 1.6kg this is impressively light weight for such a low temperature rating. The bag uses a brick work design for the baffles across the top of the bag to maximise warmth and loft. The quality Pertex Quantum Pro fabric used aids performance but also feels nice to the touch and adds durability.
Additional features such as the neck and hood baffles, double zip baffle and internal drawcords adds to the comfort level. The bag is generously sized and there is certainly a lot of space if you are just wearing base- or thin layers inside, which is obviously something to consider in terms of keeping warm during the night. There is a small zip pocket just above the neck baffle but it's not very big.
