The Sea to Summit Ember I Quilt offers functional alternitive to the traditional sleeping bag, with a number of features that make it easy to adapt temperature regualation and provide more comfort to people who like a bit more room.
Sea to Summit says:
An Ember quilt can be an ideal light and packable option for bikepackers, ultralight hikers and travelers. Constructed using high quality 850+ loft Ultra-Dry Down and featherweight fabrics, this well-constructed quilt offers freedom from the weight of a sleeping bag zipper and the freedom from the constrictive shape that comes with some sleeping bags.
The Ember Series takes the simplicity of the quilt concept a step further - snap-on attachment straps keep your quilt located on your sleeping mat, while the drawcord base of the 50°F and 35°F give the Ember a shape-shifter' function: wider at the base for more freedom of movement when it's warm, snugged down when it's cooler.
Embers also add multi-season functionality: the QuiltLock system allows an Ember to be attached to any hooded Sea to Summit sleeping bag to boost thermal performance in colder weather.
Our Verdict
The Ember I quilt offers step away from a traditional sleeping bag for those who find them constrictive and like a bit more room to move about, particuarly on warmer nights during the spring/summer season.
The features on the Ember add a lot to its overall functionality, in particular the straps on the bottom that allow you to get a good fit around a mat without fear of losing heat or allowing cold air in, but can also be popped off to allow some airflow if some cooler air is needed. The draw cord at the bottom also allows for further adjustment of the temperature for a tighter or looser fit depending on the temperature.
The Quiltlock system makes for a handy top to the rating of any hooded Sea to Summit bag so on the colder nights you can attach it on and not have to worry about faffing with a liner, allowing you to get a fuss free warmer sleep.
The double version is an ideal alternative to a double sleeping bag, particularly if you a sharing with a restless sleeper or one of you gets hotter than the other during the night, as the adjustment features allow for more room to move around and the ability to adjust the temperature on your side.
